Report Out on AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification; Next Azure Fundamentals

I decided to rush through both the preparation and certification exam process, taking the AWS free online course on Saturday, December 21st, and scheduling the exam for Monday, December 23rd. According to the certificate (see below), the course duration was 7 hours.

I think that is a fair assessment relative to the course length. Since the (CLF-C01) Exam Guide lacks depth relative to the technical aspects of how to operate in an AWS virtual environment, and the online course didn’t provide an opportunity to complete hands-on labs in the AWS cloud environment, I felt safe not having actually spun up a single EC2 instance or create a single bucket (it’s likely you need to know those definitions but not how to use them). My sense was rewarded with an exam result indicating I had passed.

What I can tell you without violating any NDA is there simply wasn’t a need for me to spin up a single EC2 instance or create a single bucket. What was necessary, is completing training like the online 7-hour course, so I could identify roughly what AWS services were related to specific situations or needs. That’s pretty much it.

Next in the queue is the Microsoft Azure Fundamentals free online course. While a little bit longer than the AWS Practitioner course, I’m thinking I’m going to try to get both the course and the certification exam done by the end of December. Given I managed to effectively do that in three days for the AWS Practitioner, I should be able to meet that goal.

Too Busy to Certify

With the start of the semester, and my other responsibilities in the Sacramento Region, I’ll admit to being to busy to complete a single certification. I need to set aside some time to focus on the Mobility+ certification. I’m thinking Friday will be certification day, once things calm down a little. I did managed to get the VMware VCP-Cloud certification on my transcript, but that necessitated contacting Dave Nelson with VMware to get it issued.

Success on the VCP IaaS Exam (Now a VCP-Cloud Certified Professional)

Took and passed the VMware VCPVCD510 certification exam today. There is a bit of confusion relative to the effects of this exam, but from what I’ve been able to figure out through research, passing this exam gives me the VMware’s VCP-Cloud certification. The path I took to reach this certification was to pass the Data Center Virtualization (VCP5-DCV) certification exam prior to taking today’s exam. My scoring report is shown below. The exam was a bit challenging, simply because there are so many components involved and each of them are interrelated and have related dependencies.

I’m going to purposely slow down on my certification efforts, likely focusing on CompTIA’s Mobility+ certification next.

VMware Associate Certifications

With the end of the semester and grades submitted, I’ve been focused on achieving additional certification objectives. As an “extra credit” assignment for my networking and security students, I challenged them to study and take the available VMware Associate exams to obtain a VMware certification. The good news for my students is because my college is a VMware Academy, exams are free (normally $120). A large number of my students took advantage of this opportunity, with a couple of students taking and passing the three (3) available associate certification exams.

I figured that I should set an example for my students, so a couple of weeks ago I took and passed the VCA 510 exam relating to data center virtualization (admittedly this is in reverse order since I have already obtained my VMware Certified Professional certification in data center virtualization).

The next focused effort was on the VCA-Cloud certification. I found this the most difficult of the three associate exams.

This was followed up with the VCA-Workforce Mobility exam.

The sole remaining Associate level certification is for Network Virtualization. Unfortunately the certification exam is not available at this time, but once is appears I’ll focus on obtaining that certification.

Success on the VMware VCP5-DT Certification Exam

The week in the online TTT (train-the-trainer) course through CSSIA, coupled with a last few of days of intensive studying and playing with the Horizon View product in the NETLABS+ environment enabled me to score well (449/500) on the VCP5-DT certification exam this morning (see scoring report below). So now I’m facing a decision relative to which certification I will tackle next. I have signed up for the beta CompTIA certification exams for IOS and Android mobile security, planning to take them in late July. Unfortunately CompTIA notified me by email that I had better reschedule those exams for sometime this month or it is unlikely I will be able to take them. So I’m giving myself a day to figure out what to do.

MPICT Faculty Development Week

I am enjoying the week’s conference here in Orange County at Coastline Community College with approximately 100 of my faculty colleagues. The course I’m taking relates specifically to “big data” with a focus on website analytics. Amazing what “they” are able to capture from us every time we visit a website. Today’s lunch presenter was Nicholas Xenos, the senior manager for Juniper Networks’ Global Academics Alliances program. I got to briefly talk to him during dinner and it looks like there is a real possibility that I will be adding Juniper content to some of my courses this next academic year. My effort next week after I take the VMware Horizon View certification is  learn more about the Academic Alliance program. That effort will likely look at obtaining an appropriate certification based upon the level of instruction.

VMware Horizon View Class

I completed my first WebEx online class with Rick Watson with VMware’s Academy Program as the instructor. This was a TTT (Train the Trainer)  four (4) day course. Labs were completed through Net Development Group’s NetLab+ “virtual online lab” (see photo below). The more I get the opportunity to use the NetLab+ product, the more I sense that I need to do what I can to make sure that it is available for the courses I teach at Sierra College.

Rick did a great job and with Jason from NetDevGroup providing real time lab support, I was able to avoid the frustration associated with having to redo labs when I made a mistake. Thanks again to CSSIA for the opportunity to take this course.

I have scheduled the VCP-DT exam at PearsonVue for Tuesday, June 11th. I’ll spend my evenings this next week studying the course manual and the VMware View Evaluators Guide.pdf. During the daylight hours I’m going to be at Coastline College in Southern California, taking a course titled “Fundamentals of Business Intelligence, Big Data and Web Analytics,” that is being offered by the Mid-Pacific ICT.VMwareWebExClass

Success on the CompTIA Project+ Exam

Managed to score a 869/900 on the Project+ PK0-003 exam this morning (see score sheet below). It was pretty much what I expected and the book I referenced in my previous post on this exam was a great source of study material. The key on all of these is to find good instruction sources and focus in on the published exam objectives for each certification exam.

My next effort over the next few weeks is obtaining the VMware certification relating to its View VDI product (VCP-DT Exam).  Preparation will be supplemented through the online course I mentioned in a previous posting that is being provided by CSSIA. Again to that organization I want to send my message of appreciation for all it does to keep community faculty like me trained.

Next Up: CompTIA Project+ (PK0-003)

With the CASP exam behind me and a little extra time as my teaching for the semester ends, I’m poised to tackle yet another certification. This one should not be all that challenging. I’m viewing it as an effort to update the IT Project+ certification I received a while back from CompTIA. That certification has effectively been retired (even though my transcript reflects the fact that I hold it for “life”). My primary study source will be the Wiley book titled “CompTIA Project+ Study Guide Authorized Courseware: Exam PK0-003.”

Since this is primarily a review effort, I am going to shorten the study time so that I take the exam on Tuesday, May 21st. This will provide time for me go get ready of a five (5) day online class on VMware’s View (a desktop VDI solution) that begins on May 28th. The course is being provided to community college faculty at no cost (other than a small $16 charge for the eBook). Thank you CSSIA for this learning opportunity.
