New Security+ Certification Exam (SY0-501)

With an anticipated release date of October 25th, the CompTIA Security+ certification exam is a likely “next target” for my certification efforts.  The SY0-501 Exam Objectives detail what is expected to be covered with the new exam. Using these objectives, I’ve created a table with the exam objectives on the left column and the right column can be used to insert information about each objective. You can download a PDF file or a DOCX file. Note the DOCX file needs to be unzipped after downloading.

Utilizing the history tab on the CertMetrics site that provides information relating to my CompTIA certification efforts, disclosed the following activities relative to Security+:

Code Exam Grade Date
SY0-401 CompTIA Security+ Certification exam Pass 2015-Feb-09
SY0-301 CompTIA Security+ Certification exam Pass 2013-Oct-08
SY0-201 Security+ Exam (2008 Edition) Pass 2009-Aug-01
SY0-101 Security+ Exam Pass 2003-Sep-15

There isn’t a lot of information about the exam, with “To Be Announced” (TBA) scattered across the CompTIA site detailing the exam. One article written a while back (dated May 3, 2016) suggests a list of anticipated changes between the SY0-401 and SY0-501 exams. Frankly I don’t have a crystal ball that would allow me to provide an informed answer more than a year ago about an exam without having the new exam objectives or feedback from those who took the beta version of the new exam.

This week I’m attending the CompTIA Partner Summit in Austin, Texas, and I’ll try to keep my ears to the ground for information relating to the exam. Mark Ciampa is giving a presentation on Thursday afternoon on the Security+ certification. I’m presenting in the next session, with a focus on the CSA+ certification, along with other activities I’m involved in here in California with the community college system. My slide deck details what I’ll be talking about (see CSAplus Presentation-rev1-1bsfod5).
